Mount Teide Sunset Sightseeing by Mustang
A sunset drive up to Teide National Park in a Mustang convertible.
Mount Teide is Spain's highest peak at 3,718 metres, and a cable car lifts you from 2,356 metres to 3,555 metres in under 8 minutes. An adult return costs €42 and a child aged 3 to 13 pays €21 on the operator's price list (read 17 October 2026). The last 163 metres to the summit need a separate permit from the national park, booked through Tenerife ON.

Teide National Park covers roughly 19,000 hectares of lava fields, pumice slopes and rock towers in the middle of the island, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. The drive up is part of the day: you climb out of pine forest into a wide volcanic crater floor, with the peak rising straight ahead.
Two visitor centres explain what you are looking at. El Portillo covers the park's geology and its plants and animals, and Cañada Blanca looks at how people have lived with the mountain. Both open from 9am to 4pm. From Cañada Blanca a guided walk around the Roques de García sets off at 9:15am and 1:30pm and takes 2 to 2.5 hours.

The Teide cable car runs from a base station at 2,356 metres to La Rambleta at 3,555 metres. Cabins hold up to 44 people and reach the top in under 8 minutes. A return ticket includes the Science and Legend exhibition, and you can add an audio guide or a guided walk to the Pico Viejo viewpoint.
Fares on the operator's site (read 17 October 2026): €42 for an adult return and €21 for a child aged 3 to 13; one way costs €23.50 and €11.75. Canary Islands residents pay less. Slots are timed and places are limited, so book online and be at the boarding area 20 minutes early. Changes and cancellations are free until 6pm the day before.
Opening hours follow the season. From 25 October to 31 December the cable car runs 9am to 5pm, with the last trip up at 4pm. In high summer it stays open until 6:40pm. Outside normal hours it also runs sunset trips for a maximum of 90 people.

Your stay at the upper station is limited to one hour, or two hours if you hold a summit permit. Short trails lead off La Rambleta to viewpoints: one looks across to Pico Viejo, the old crater next door, and another, La Fortaleza, looks north over the Orotava valley. The guided Pico Viejo walk is the simplest way to see more without planning permits yourself.
Wear closed shoes with grip: sandals, heels and flat-soled shoes are not allowed. Children under 3 and pregnant women cannot ride up, and the operator asks anyone with a heart condition to check with a doctor first.
The summit crater is reached by the Telesforo Bravo trail, a 0.69 km path from La Rambleta that takes about 45 minutes with slopes of up to 60%. Walking it needs a permit from the national park, booked through the Tenerife ON website. The permit is valid only for its date and time slot, and it is separate from the cable car, so book both and leave about 30 minutes between your cable car slot and your permit time.
Permits are limited and go early: the cable car operator advises applying months in advance. Fit walkers can also climb all the way from the road on the Montaña Blanca trail, 8.2 km and about 5 hours 30 minutes, which also needs a Tenerife ON booking. The Altavista refuge sits above 3,200 metres on that route for anyone who wants to break the climb.

A guided hike to the summit of Mount Teide.
By car, the TF-21 climbs to the park from La Orotava in the north and from the south through Vilaflor, the TF-24 comes in from La Laguna, and the TF-38 links the park with the west coast. TITSA buses run up from Costa Adeje and from Puerto de la Cruz.
A tour saves the drive and the parking. Day trips with the cable car included collect you from the main resorts, and sunset and stargazing trips stay on after the day visitors have gone. For something different, there are sunset drives by Mustang convertible and tandem paragliding flights that launch from the mountain. On the way down the north side, La Orotava is worth a stop: its old town and banana farms sit at the foot of the TF-21.
