This coast sits between the two airports. Candelaria is about 20 minutes from Tenerife North (TFN) and about 35 minutes from Tenerife South (TFS); Güímar is roughly 30 minutes from each, and Arico is closer to the south. The TF-1 motorway runs the length of the coast. TITSA buses link the towns with Santa Cruz, and a car makes exploring easier.
Beaches here are volcanic: black sand and pebbles with an urban, local feel, good for swimming when the sea is calm. Las Caletillas is one of Candelaria's better known beaches. Puertito de Güímar's beach is black sand and pebbles in the middle of the village, sheltered by stone breakwaters, with gentle water that suits families, plus toilets, showers and bars.
Candelaria's basilica holds the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands, and thousands of pilgrims walk there each August, with the peak on the night of 14 to 15 August. In Güímar, the Pirámides de Güímar ethnographic park sits in the hills, and an easy 6.9 km loop from Puertito crosses the volcanic Malpaís de Güímar reserve.
Thousands of pilgrims walk to the basilica each August, with the peak on the night of 14 to 15 August.
An ethnographic park in the hills above Güímar, built around stepped stone pyramids, with exhibitions on pyramid building cultures.
Yes. Its black sand and pebble beach is sheltered by breakwaters, so the water is usually gentle, and bars are right beside it.
