Tenerife South (TFS) is about 30 minutes away by road, up a winding mountain road from the coast. Las Cañadas, inside the national park, is about an hour from either airport. A hire car is close to essential here: bus services into the mountains are limited, and the joy of a stay is driving to the park early or late.
There are no beaches up here. The nearest are on the south coast about 40 minutes downhill: El Médano's long grey sand beach, or Las Vistas in Los Cristianos, a wide pale sand bay with a 2026 Blue Flag. Many visitors pair a few nights in the mountains with a stay by the sea.
Walking is the draw. The Paisaje Lunar trail starts in Vilaflor and runs about 6 km through pine forest to the Paisaje Lunar viewpoint, and other routes lead on towards Teide. To walk the final stretch to the 3,715 metre summit from the cable car's top station you need a permit booked in advance through Tenerife ON, and the cable car is booked separately.
The historic centre sits at about 1,400 metres, making it one of the highest villages in Spain.
Yes, for the final summit trail above the cable car. Book it in advance through Tenerife ON; the cable car ticket is separate.
Realistically yes. Buses into the mountains are limited, and a car lets you reach the national park and the coast easily.
About 40 minutes by road down to the south coast resorts such as El Médano and Los Cristianos.
