AC Hotel Tenerife fills the old Maya building in the historic heart of Santa Cruz, the city's first shopping centre, now reworked as an 83-room four-star with a clean, modern look. It faces the marina, so the port, Plaza de España and the shopping streets around Calle Castillo are all a few minutes away on foot.

The highlight is up top: a pool on the sixth floor and the Azotea del 31 terrace bar, good for a swim after a day in the city and a drink as the lights come on. Downstairs, the AC Lounge shifts from coffee to cocktails and local plates through the day, and there is an à la carte restaurant and a gym. It suits city breakers, cruise passengers with a night either side, and anyone working in the capital.
