Gran Hotel Taoro opened in 1890 as one of Spain's first grand hotels and has been restored as a five-star with 199 rooms and suites. It stands on the hill above Puerto de la Cruz among century-old gardens, with views over the Atlantic, the Orotava Valley and Mount Teide.
Deluxe rooms are 30 square metres and face the gardens, the mountains or the ocean; suites run up to a 128 square metre presidential suite. There are two heated adult pools and a children's pool, and the Sandára wellness centre has a sauna, Turkish bath and treatment rooms for guests aged 16 and over, next to a Technogym gym with an outdoor yoga space. Five restaurants include a breakfast buffet, a poolside grill and a gourmet bistro. It suits couples and families who want history and views.
Tenerife North (TFN) is about 20 minutes by car and Tenerife South (TFS) about an hour. Private parking is available for a daily charge. Small pets are accepted.
